Stress Test · Uncut Execution

Live Execution Proof

An uncut, 18-minute terminal execution of the Escepine engine under intentional resource starvation, network degradation, and database volatility.

Briefing

Every agentic system gets built by hand around your SOPs, tools, and policies. Change one, and you re-test the entire system. Add a workflow, and you build a new one. Every time, you re-solve the same two problems: execution reliability — retries, state, recovery — and constraining LLMs you cannot trust.

Escepine is the execution plane underneath. You bring the SOPs, tools, and policies. You plug them in once. Every workflow runs on the same rails — auditable, recoverable, one control plane.

This recording is not a demonstration of the happy path. It is a controlled stress test. We throttled resources to absolute limits, bombarded the engine with massive payloads, and simulated the harshest failure scenarios production can produce. The objective was singular: prove that the engine maintains execution reliability, durability, and fault tolerance when everything else breaks.

Policies were intentionally omitted for this test. The objective was to stress-test raw execution durability — retries, state recovery, and fault tolerance — without the safety net of runtime policy enforcement. Cedar policy enforcement is demonstrated separately in the architecture documentation.

Conditions Imposed

This execution was deliberately subjected to the following constraints:

API Throttling — The engine was restricted to free-tier API limits using a lightweight model, forcing rate-limit handling and context bottlenecks at every step.

Payload Saturation — Massive payloads were injected across up to 60 parallel tool calls, extracting millions of words in real time to test memory management and state integrity.

Network Degradation — Severe connection drops and latency spikes were simulated to test retry logic, state persistence, and workflow recovery.

Database Volatility — Connection instability and data corruption were introduced to test the engine's ability to detect, isolate, and recover from storage-layer failures.

Mechanisms Active During This Execution

The following engine mechanisms were triggered, tested, and verified during this run. Each mechanism corresponds to a timestamped event in the execution feed.

01Human-in-the-Loop Approval Gates

Triggered at: 0:52

The engine paused execution and routed the workflow to a human reviewer before proceeding. The approval gate is enforced at the runtime level — the LLM cannot bypass, override, or reason past it. The workflow remained parked until explicit human confirmation was received.

Why it matters: In production environments, certain actions — financial transactions, data deletions, external API writes — must never execute without human authorization. Escepine enforces this boundary outside the model's control.

02Schema Validation & Missing Data Detection

Triggered at: 1:01

A required data field was intentionally deleted before execution. The engine's schema checkpoint detected the missing field, halted the affected step, and flagged the deviation before it could propagate downstream. The workflow did not silently continue with incomplete data.

Why it matters: Without schema checkpoints, a missing field becomes a silent corruption. The agent produces an output that looks valid but contains a critical gap. By the time a human notices, the error has cascaded through every subsequent step.

03Dynamic Workflow Fan-Out & Merge

Triggered at: 1:38 (fan-out) | 9:43 (merge)

The engine dynamically split the workflow into parallel sub-tasks, executing up to 60 concurrent tool calls across Exa MCP and Firecrawl MCP. At step 9:43, all parallel branches merged back into a single execution path with state integrity preserved across every branch.

Why it matters: Multi-step agentic workflows are not linear. They branch, parallelize, and recombine. The execution plane must manage state across concurrent branches without race conditions, data loss, or orphaned processes.

04LLM Loop Detection & Workflow Parking

Triggered at: 2:38

The LLM entered a recursive reasoning loop, generating repetitive output without advancing the workflow state. The engine detected the loop pattern, halted execution, and parked the workflow for human review instead of allowing the loop to consume resources indefinitely.

Why it matters: Without loop detection, a single hallucinating model can burn through API credits, exhaust rate limits, and lock the workflow in an infinite cycle. The engine enforces hard iteration caps and pattern recognition to terminate runaway loops before they become cost incidents.

05Hallucination Detection & Data Integrity Verification

Triggered at: 8:41

The LLM generated output containing hallucinated data — fabricated references and dropped context from earlier steps. The engine's verification layer detected the inconsistency between the generated output and the evidence ledger, flagged the deviation, and parked the workflow for human review rather than committing corrupted data.

Why it matters: Hallucinations are not model bugs. They are statistical inevitabilities in probabilistic systems. The execution plane must treat every LLM output as unverified until it passes schema validation, evidence cross-referencing, and integrity checks.

06Stale Data Detection & Self-Healing

Triggered at: 13:46

Mid-execution, the engine detected that a data source had returned stale information — content that no longer reflected the current state of the target system. Rather than proceeding with outdated data or failing silently, the engine located the source of the staleness, triggered a healing sequence, regenerated the affected content from a fresh source, and resumed execution without human intervention.

Why it matters: In long-running workflows that span minutes or hours, external data sources change between steps. A workflow that started with fresh data at step 1 may be operating on stale data by step 50. The engine must detect, isolate, and recover from temporal data inconsistencies autonomously.

07Retry Logic & Fault Tolerance Under Network Degradation

Status: Active throughout execution

Simulated network drops and connection failures were injected across all 101 steps. The engine's retry mechanism handled transient failures with exponential backoff, preserved workflow state across disconnections, and resumed execution from the last committed checkpoint without re-running completed steps.

Why it matters: Production networks are not stable. API endpoints timeout. Connections drop. Databases become temporarily unavailable. The execution plane must treat every network interaction as potentially unreliable and maintain state persistence across failures.

08Rate Limit Handling & Context Bottleneck Management

Status: Active throughout execution

The engine was restricted to free-tier API limits using Gemini Flash-Lite. When rate limits were hit, the engine queued requests, managed token budgets, pruned context windows to prevent overflow, and resumed execution when capacity became available — all without losing workflow state or dropping tool calls.

Why it matters: In production, you cannot assume unlimited API access. Rate limits are a hard constraint. The engine must manage throughput, queue excess requests, and maintain execution continuity under resource starvation.

09Evidence Ledger & Real-Time Execution Traces

Status: Active throughout execution

Every state transition, tool call, schema validation, policy check, and failure recovery was logged to the immutable evidence ledger in real time. The rolling feed visible during execution shows the complete trace history, enabling full replay and audit of the entire workflow.

Why it matters: When an agent fails in production, the first question is always: “What exactly happened, and why?” Without an immutable, step-by-step trace, you cannot answer that question. The evidence ledger makes every execution fully auditable and reproducible.

10Artifact Generation & Workflow Completion

Triggered at: 18:15 (completion) | 18:20 (artifacts)

Despite 6 human intervention points, multiple hallucination detections, a stale data healing event, simulated network failures, and resource throttling, the engine completed all 101 steps and generated the final deliverable artifacts. No step was skipped. No data was silently corrupted. The workflow terminated in a verified, complete state.

Why it matters: The ultimate measure of an execution plane is not whether it can run a happy path. It is whether it can deliver a correct, complete outcome when the environment is actively hostile. This execution proves that Escepine can.

All mechanisms listed above operated at the runtime layer, outside the LLM context window. The model did not control, override, or bypass any of these behaviors.
